Working within a shape-they suggest starting with a circle, can offer a helpful starting point. “When we start sketching, we usually like to have some type of template,” says Nathan Goldman, who hosts the class Illustrating an Icon Set: Design a Cohesive Series with his business partner Dan Kuhken. But it is possible to make them other sizes: One growing trend is to create scalable sets of icons that you can adapt depending on the needs of the program or project. ![]() First, what size and shape will your icons be? Website icons are commonly 16, 32, or 48 pixels. With an idea in mind, it’s time to figure out the technical details you’ll need to execute. The best icons can stand the test of time with little or no tweaking. Think about how your icon will resonate with people in one, five, or ten years. Try running ideas past friends in an informal focus group during the brainstorming process, too. If you spot a comparable icon, tweak yours so that it stands out and better distinguishes your brand. Once you have a relatively solid idea, do some research and see if there are any similar icons in the marketplace-after all, you don’t want to waste time creating something that already exists. If things seem too complicated or obscure, they probably are. They shouldn’t be fussy or have lots of extra features. Remember that icons are small, and you want people to be able to recognize them fairly quickly. Many icon designers start with basic shapes like triangles, squares, or circles, and turn them into streamlined, clean graphics. The best icons are simple and don’t need text to be understood. Think about how you can use font, shape, or color to tie the set of icons together. It really helps me think ahead.” While the individual icons should stand on their own, you’ll also want the set to flow together and blend cohesively. I do this with every single project I’ve done. “This list is basically just a brain dump of ideas under the theme. “I make a list in my Illustrator working file,” says designer Adam Whitcroft, who shares tips in his Skillshare Original Icon Design: Create a Cohesive Icon Set. When you tackle a project like that, start by considering the overall theme and what individual elements you might include. Often, designers will produce icons as a set to correspond with different products or ideas. If you get stuck, try looking around for inspiration-all it takes is opening your phone and looking at the home screen. You can even start doodling as ideas come to you. Right now, don’t censor yourself-just write down thoughts and ideas until you flesh out what you want to create. Is it professional or whimsical? Colorful or monotone? Flat or 3D? Hand-drawn or precise? Consider how the icon will be used, who will see it, what you want it to represent, and what colors or images you want it to contain. Here, we’ll look at how to create an icon for a website, sign, or publication.Įvery great design project starts with a brainstorming session, and icon design is no different. Fortunately, understanding a few basic principles can help you create an icon that works seamlessly in multiple contexts-and can be tweaked as needed. Icons can be used anywhere, including social media, flyers, signs, and product packaging, and landing on an image that works in all of those environments can feel like an impossible task. But trying to design your own can be an overwhelming process. ![]() In both personal and professional situations, icons can be a cost-effective way to help people easily recognize the content you create. They’re incredibly powerful.” Image from Edward Boatman’s Skillshare Original “That information is almost always communicated visually through pictograms because these little images can make a huge impact. ![]() “A good way to think about the power of visual communication is to think about the most important information that you encounter daily, and that’s health and safety information,” says Edward Boatman, co-founder of the Noun Project and the instructor behind the Skillshare Original Icon Design: Creating Pictograms with Purpose. The brain processes visual cues much faster than textual cues, so an icon can convey a message much faster than the written word. Icons are powerful because they make concise statements. They tell stories, share information, and contribute to the way people think about the world around them. Icons are everywhere, from social media to food labels to street signs. ![]() I am strongly recommending to all my friends thatĭocuments with LyX. Perhaps some of you will find this of interest. Go!” Each child places his/her hand on a domino, ready to flip it over. First, students place all dominoes face down. This is a classic card game that can also be played using dominoes. There are three possibilities for this game: both sides are even, both sides are odd, or one side is even and one side is odd. The dominoes are then sorted into small bowls or baskets. After flipping a domino, the sides are added and then the students determine if the sum is even or odd. Variation:įor younger kids, instead of prime and composite, they can focus on even or odd. The student with the most dominoes at the end is the winner. The same process would happen if the coin said composite, but students keep their composite dominoes and discard prime dominoes. The students with composite numbers put theirs in a discard pile. The Prime/Composite coin is flipped and if it lands on prime, all students with prime numbers can keep their dominoes. ![]() Each student tells his/her answer and says if it is prime or composite (for example 11 is prime). You can decide if the sides are either added or multiplied together to get a number. Each student takes a domino and flips it over. You’ll want to create a Prime/Composite coin just like the More/Less coin described above for this game. In this game, students are working on prime and composite numbers. Again, students compare numbers to decide who wins, either larger or smaller as determined before or with the More/Less coin. In the second, students line up both dominoes behind the decimal to create a number up to the 10,000th place. ![]() The other domino goes behind the decimal to make a tenth and a hundredth. In the first version, students place the first domino in front of the decimal point to represent a number with tens and ones (for example, 4 and 2 would be 42). There are two possible decimal games I like to play. On the mat, place a dot to represent a decimal. To make this a decimal game, make a domino mat (kids can use scratch paper or you can make a pretty one using colored paper and possibly laminate it too). The student with the winning number keeps the dominoes. For a small number, the smallest number will go in the front. To create a large number, a student will place the largest number in the front. Each student flips two dominoes over, and places the two next to each other to create a four-digit number. I like this because it adds suspense to the game and because no one feels the need to give up before the game is over if it becomes obvious that there is no chance for winning. If more is shown, the higher number wins and if less is shown, the smaller number wins. That way at the end of the game, no one knows who has won until you flip the more/less coin. I attach a circle sticker (or you could use a sharpie) on one side with the word “more” and the other side with the word “less”. One thing I like to do is to use a More/Less Coin that I make ahead of time. So, the first round they would build the largest number possible and the next round would be the smallest number possible. Students will be using dominoes to build larger or smaller numbers. This game can be played in a number of ways. The dollar store usually carries small sets of dominoes around the holidays too! Here are a few math games using dominoes! All of the games can be tweaked up or down to make them work for a number of grade levels or for a student’s particular needs. However, if you have a few students who struggle reading the dots on the domino or have some vision impairment, this set has large, printed numbers on each side of the domino.ĭo be mindful that each set linked above is a double 12 type domino meaning, but if you’re working with smaller numbers or younger students, you may want to check out this set of type 6 dominoes. Understand it, thank it for what it is telling you about yourself, and then try to do it anyway. But I don’t recommend ignoring your fear. It is entirely possible to act despite your fear. Be willing to feel the fear and do it anyway. Figure out your biggest hurdle so you can start to address it.ģ. Perhaps you need to let go of your belief that noone else will give you a job, so that you can start applying for new opportunities. Perhaps you need to see your EAP to address some of the stress and anxiety you feel when you can’t say ‘no’ to every task that is asked of you. That means, not turning on the podcast or scrolling through facebook every time your find your mind has a moment of calm. But this approach won’t work unless you have moments of quiet in your day. What this means in practice, is asking yourself these questions, then forgetting about them and allowing your subconscious the bring you the answers. But you can also just ask yourself these questions, and give yourself some quiet head space to see what emerges. You need to ask yourself: “What is going on here”, “Why am I not going after this”, “Why am I not trying to solve this problem”, “What is going on in my self-conscious?”, What might be driving this fear?” Journalling is an especially valuable tool for this. You need to get curious, be willing to try to understand the fears that are underlying your procrastination and delay in acting. When you feel stuck by a hurdle, you need to take the time to get clear about what has you stuck on this. Here are the things I’ve learned, which have relevence to your own journey.ġ. But I’ve learned some valuable lessons from that procrastination. And I let myself procrastinate on this for 3 whole years. In the case of tackling Amazon, I was my own worst enemy. That doesn’t excuse the behaviour of others who may be in the wrong, but it does tell us that it is up to us to do something about the unsatisfactory situation we find ourselves in. The way we act is an interplay between the challenge that is in front of us, and our individual agency to respond to that action. We tell ourselves that no-one else would give us a job with the conditions we want, so convince ourselves that we are trapped in a job that isn’t serving our potential. We downgrade our belief in our potential in response to a supervisor undermines our potential. Because in truth, we keep often ourselves small in response to the actions of others. In the Lead Mama Lead conversation, I talk a lot about us being held back by others, and this is partially true. That you are playing small, and that you are the one holding yourself back. It is a difficult thing to stomach about yourself. In short, I have been playing small when it comes to my writing career. And perhaps most significantly, anxiety about being more visible in the world and opening myself up to criticism and an even bigger fear of failure. For 3 years I have procrastinated at of fear of failure, out of anxiety about how much I have to learn about succeeding on new platforms. But I have been wanting to launch it on Amazon to reach new audiences, and for 3 years I have put it off. I’ve actually been selling it online through my sustainable fashion blog for 3 years. To be clear, this book was not newly written. I launched my first self-published book on Amazon. This month I climbed a new hurdle in my leadership journey. ![]() No Daylight Saving Time in UTCĭaylight Saving Time (DST) is not used for UTC as it is a time standard for all time zones.
